Last weekend was a long one because Monday was a bank holiday. This gave me plenty of time to recover from the Swiss fraud and start over: I kind of turned the page by writing the letter. By the way, I still haven’t been able to translate and send my father’s version of it… somehow I can’t be bothered anymore.
Having vented, I turned into looking for a job… again, using Economics.
This year I read a couple of articles about the way people looked for jobs and how companies tried to fill their vacancies. Even if economists haven`t reached a consensus regarding which method leads to better job positions or better workers, it seems to be a universal truth that the most common method is through referrals and contacts. “Common sense”, right?
Very effective method, I must say. At least for getting interviews; I contacted a couple of friends and it turned out that their companies had vacancies. This gave me two interviews and even if I was turned down by one of the places, on the other one I have had a couple of interviews more: the final one is on Monday.
The second source of interviews was my old bosses and places I worked. I have only worked a couple of times, but the bosses move job places, so this allowed me to expand my possibilities. I got another interview, actually a proper offer through one of them, but it seems a bit low for me and I am currently aiming for a high salary.
Finally, I contacted my referees (previous professors) and I visited my former university. I filled an application for being a teaching assistant; that is a bit unflattering since I was hoping I could have a class of my own, but anyways.
After all this process, I got something REALLY important: Knowledge, advice. I know someone is going to quit in a couple of months, so I should come back again. I know such and such work in the topics I like so I wrote to them… and boom! Another interview is coming next week. I now know that smaller and less famous universities could appreciate my profile and give me a proper course (I will write to them next week). I now know that such and such have left the company and are now working in the states (interesting referees). A secretary told me to apply here and there because they have vacancies; and that I should also consider some consulting businesses, like her daughter did.
This second effect of my referral and contact search was never considered in the papers I read. And I believe it’s what is actually going to give a boost to my job search. Food for thought.
